Matilda Baxendale -Kirby
Matilda Baxendale-Kirby is an emerging artist whose practice bridges historical and contemporary languages through the use of both 2D and 3D forms. Drawing inspiration from classical painting, their work reinterprets the past through a modern lens, placing women’s bodies and experiences at the centre of the image. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2024. Deeply informed by nightlife culture, Matilda explores themes of desire, power and vulnerability, examining how women are viewed and treated within contemporary society. Their work often carries subtle undercurrents of sexual violence and abuse, addressing these realities through symbolism and material tension. They are best known for the Petite Women series, which has been exhibited widely across London and has received multiple photography awards. Alongside this body of work, she also produces sculptural mirror ball works, shown across London, which extend their investigation into reflection, fragmentation, and the performative nature of femininity.
